1. Describe

LM2936M-5.0 Ultra-Low Quiescent Current Regulator with low dropout voltage and low current at Standby mode. Quiescent current is less than 15μA At 100µA load, the LM2936 is ideal for Used in automobiles and other battery powered systems. The LM2936 retains all the functions that are common low dropout regulators, including a low drop-out PNP pass-through device, short-circuit protected, reverse battery protection and thermal shutdown. The maximum operating voltage of the LM2936 is 40V limits, -40°C to 125°C operating temperature range, and ±3% output voltage tolerance over the entire output current, input voltage and temperature range. LM2936 in TO-92 through-hole package packages, as well as SOIC-8, VSSOP, SOT–223 and TO-252 surface mount package.

6. Function description

1. High input operating voltage

Unlike other PNP low dropout regulators, the LM2936 is fully operational at VIN = 40 V, while the LM2936HV is fully operational at VIN = 60 V. Due to the power dissipation characteristics of the available packages, full output current cannot be guaranteed for all combinations of ambient temperature and input voltage. While the LM2936HV remains regulated at 60 V, it cannot tolerate output shorts to ground when VIN is above 40 V due to safe operating area limitations of the internal PNP pass device. Above 60V, the LM2936 will fail, catastrophically affecting the regulator and possibly the load. Do not use this device in designs where input operating voltages may exceed 40 V or transients may exceed 60 V.

2. Thermal Shutdown (TSD)

The TSD circuit of the LM2936 is designed to protect the device from temporary thermal overload conditions. The TSD circuit is not intended to replace a proper heat sink. Continuous operation of the LM2936 device at TSD may degrade device reliability as the junction temperature will exceed the absolute maximum junction temperature rating. If the LM2936 enters TSD mode, the output current will be shut down until the junction temperature drops by about 10°C, then the output current will automatically resume. The LM2936 will continuously cycle in and out of the TSD until the condition is corrected. The LM2936 TSD junction temperature is typically 160°C.

3. Short-circuit current limit

The output current limit circuit of the LM2936 is designed to limit the output current under abnormally low load impedance conditions. This includes situations where the output may be shorted directly to ground. Continuous operation of the LM2936 under current limit typically causes the LM2936 to transition to TSD model.

4. Shutdown (SD) pin

The LM2936BM has a pin to turn off the regulator output. Applying a logic high level (> 2 V) to the SD pin will cause the output to turn off. Leaving the SD pin open, connecting it to ground, or applying a logic low (< 0.6 V) will allow the regulator output to turn on.

5. Device function mode

The LM2936 design does not include any undervoltage lockout (UVLO) or overvoltage shutdown (OVSD) features. Typically, the output voltage tracks the input voltage until the input voltage is greater than VOUT+1V. When the input voltage is greater than VOUT+1V, the LM2936 operates linearly and the output voltage is regulated; however, the device is sensitive to any small perturbation in the input voltage. The dynamic performance of the device is improved when the input voltage is at least 2 V higher than the output voltage.

7. Application Information

The LM2936 ultra-low quiescent current regulator features low dropout and low current mode in standby. The maximum operating voltage of the LM2936 is limited to 40V and the operating temperature range is -40°C to 125°C. The following sections provide a simplified discussion of the design process over the full output current, input voltage and temperature range. There is also WEBENCH® software available for generating complete designs. When generating designs, WEBENCH utilizes an iterative design process and access to a comprehensive component database.
