1. Describe

The LM35 series are precision integrated circuit temperature devices with an output voltage that is linearly proportional to the Celsius temperature. The LM35DT/NOPB device offers advantages over linear temperature sensors calibrated in Kelvin because the user does not need to subtract a large constant voltage from the output to obtain a convenient scale in degrees Celsius. The LM35 device provides typical accuracy of ±¼°C at room temperature and ±¾°C over the full temperature range of -55°C to 150°C without any external calibration or trimming. Ensure cost reduction through wafer-level trimming and calibration. The low output impedance, linear output, and precise inherent calibration of the LM35 device make interfacing with readout or control circuitry particularly easy. The device operates from a single supply or positive and negative supplies. Since the LM35 device draws only 60 μA from the power supply, its self-heating in still air is very low, below 0.1°C. The LM35 device is specified over the -55°C to 150°C temperature range, while the LM35C device is specified over the -40°C to 110°C temperature range (-10° for better accuracy). The LM35 family of devices is available in a hermetic TO transistor package, while the LM35C, LM35CA and LM35D devices are available in a plastic TO-92 transistor package. The LM35D device is available in an 8-pin surface mount small outline and plastic TO-220 package.

6. Function description

    1. LM35 transfer function

The accuracy specification for the LM35 is given by a simple linear transfer function: VOUT = 10 mv/°C × T where

         - VOUT is the output voltage of the LM35

         - T is the temperature in °C

    2. Device functional mode

The only functional mode of the LM35 is that it has an analog output proportional to temperature

7. Application Information

The characteristics of the LM35 make it suitable for many general purpose temperature sensing applications. Multipack Options extend its flexibility. Like most micropower circuits, the LM35 device has a limited ability to drive heavy capacitive loads. Alone, the LM35 device can drive 50 pF without special precautions. If a heavier load is expected, it is easy to isolate or decouple the load with a resistor. Capacitor tolerance can be improved by adding a series R-C damper from the output to ground. When the LM35 device uses a 200-Ω load resistor, the device is relatively immune to routing capacitance because the capacitance forms a bypass from ground to the input rather than the output. However, as with any linear circuit connected to wires in harsh environments, performance is adversely affected by strong electromagnetic sources (such as relays, radio transmitters, motors with arc brushes and SCR transients) because the wires act as receiving antennas and internal The junction acts as a rectifier. For best results in this situation, a bypass capacitor from VIN to ground and an R-C damper in series, such as 75 Ω in series with 0.2 or 1 μF from the output to ground, are often useful.
