1. Describe

The AD8801/AD8803AR provide eight digitally controlled DC voltage outputs. Potentiometer Divider TrimDAC® allows replacement of mechanical trimmer functionality in new designs. The AD8801/AD8803 are ideal for DC voltage regulation applications. The AD8801 is easily programmable through the serial interface microcontroller port and has a mid-scale preset, ideal for potentiometer replacement from nominal. Applications such as gain control of video amplifiers, voltage control of frequency and bandwidth in video equipment, geometric correction and automatic adjustment in CRT computer graphics displays are just a few of the many applications that are well suited for these components. The AD8803 provides independent control of the top and bottom of the potentiometer divider, allowing individual zero-scale voltage settings determined by the VREFL pin. This helps maximize the resolution of the device with a limited range of allowable voltage control. The AD8801/AD8803 contain eight voltage output digital-to-analog converters that share a common voltage reference input. Each DAC has its own DAC register to hold its output state. These DAC registers are an input digital interface, updated from an internal serial-to-parallel shift register loaded from a standard three-wire serial. The 11 data bits form the data word clock into the serial input register. The data word is decoded at the address where the first 3 bits determine the DAC register and the last 8 bits of data are loaded. The AD8801/AD88035 V supply consumes only 5 µA. In addition, the reference input current consumption in shutdown mode is reduced to 5 µA, and the DAC latch settings are saved for use after normal operation is resumed. The AD8801/AD8803 are available in 16-lead plastic DIP and 1.5 mm high SO-16 surface mount packages.
