1. Description

The L78 series of three-terminal positive regulators is available in TO-220, TO-220FP, D²PAK and DPAK packages and several fixed output voltages, making it useful in a wide range of applications. These regulators can provide local on-card regulation, eliminating the distribution problems associated with single point regulation. Each type embeds internal current limiting, thermal shut-down and safe area protection, making it essentially indestructible. If adequate heat sinking is provided, they can deliver over 1 A output current. Although designed primarily as fixed voltage regulators, these devices can be used with external components to obtain adjustable voltage and currents.

In many low current applications, No compensation capacitor is required. However, it is recommended to bypass the regulator input If the length of the regulator connected to the power supply filter is longer, or if the output load capacitance Very big. The input bypass capacitor should be selected to provide good high-frequency characteristics to ensure Stable operation under all load conditions. A 0.33 µF or greater tantalum, polyester film or other low-frequency internal impedance should be selected. The bypass capacitor should be installed on the shortest lead that passes directly through the input terminal of the regulator. Generally good construction techniques, since the voltage stabilizer has no external induction, it should be used to minimize the ground loop and lead resistance drop. Adding an operational amplifier allows adjustment to higher or intermediate values while maintaining Adjustment characteristics. The minimum voltage obtained by this arrangement is 2 V higher than the regulator Voltage. The high current regulator can be modified to provide power short-circuit protection by adding a short-circuit detection resistor, RSC and an additional PNP transistor to implement the circuit.
